Frequently Asked Questions

Air conditioning is typically referred to as a cooling system. The actual term as the name suggests refers to conditioning of the air such as filtering / heating and cooling to maintain set temperatures. Ventilation is referred to as ventilating a space, providing fresh air and removing stale air. The two can be combined however, do not take for granted that either system will perform both operations...

Popular air conditioning systems are usually heat pumps as standard (Both heating and cooling). The systems now use inverter technology which means the system will vary the amount of heating or cooling given, to match the requirement.. Most systems are now accredited with energy labels such as used on household appliances. Most small to medium systems are "A" rated in both heating and cooling.

We are happy to give impartial advice on simple cost effective solutions that will help efficiency. You may be surprised how simple some solutions are to make a substantial difference...

This is a very common question with a simple answer...A sealed system (as most refrigeration and air conditioning systems are) does not need topping up, unless it has a leak. Current regulations are in place to minimise leaks from any system containing ozone depleting or gases with global warming potentials. If its leaking it needs repairing, never accept the excuse of topping up, this is now illegal.

There has never been a reported case of illness relating directly to an air conditioning system. however, premises can suffer from lack of ventilation, in modern well sealed buildings this can cause a theoretical term known as "Sick building syndrome". Sick building syndrome has been related to poor ventilation, build up of dust / mildew spores and poor ventilation. The heavy use of multiple electronic appliances and ozone producing photo copiers are also linked.

Air conditioning units create condensate water when cooling. After a while dust and airborne particles can collect in the drainage systems causing mold and bad smells. regular servicing includes cleaning and sanitising of air conditioning drain assemblies.

Servicing is sometimes seen as a "necessary evil". Many systems are neglected so badly that they become beyond repair. Regular servicing at typically six month intervals can prolong your systems useful life. Identification of potential problems will save money and those annoying breakdowns that happen when you need the system the most.

HCFC refrigerants shall be banned from use in January 2010. This does not mean that your systems should be immediately ripped out. The maintenance and inspection of these systems will become mandatory for owners of such equipment. It will however be ilegal for any person to recharge a system with virgin HCFC refrigerants from this date. Consideration must be given to alternatives in the near future. See F gas section for more details...

An assessment must be made of your systems, to determine the condition and age. There are alternative "Drop in" refrigerants that can replace the HCFC refrigerants. These replacements can cause premature failure if the systems are in poor condition. It can be beneficial to adapt to more energy efficient new systems in some cases.

The control system of any HVAC plant has a vast effect on the efficiency and reliability of the system. Modern electronic control, if installed and set up correctly can enhance a systems reliability and performance. Always ensure that your systems are operating correctly, never ignore poor control...
